Resume

Rural families in Eastern Bolivia are suffering from severe drought, water scarcity and failed harvest. The FCBC/AKAM partnerships initiates a rapid response to distribute water and basic nutritious food packages. The primary target group are women, children, and elderly people in 21 of the most remote communities in the eastern Chiquitano region. In addition, communities are supported with water harvesting equipment, drought resistant perennial seeds and tree seedlings to strentgthen climate change adaptation capacities. Planting of native trees is a long-term strategy to strengthen drought vulnerable communities’ adaptation to new recurrent treats. The selected trees fix nitrogen, provide shade, and reduce temperatures in their immediate surroundings, retain moisture and provide families with fruits as food supplement. Maintenance of both water harvesting equipment and trees is accompanied by training and organization to support sustainability of the intervention.
