Overall targets

Contribute towards increased citizen’s engagement and duty bearer’s responsiveness for improved Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) service delivery in four wards of Nakawa by the end of March 2017.

Immediate targets

1) To empower the citizens in selected wards of Nakawa municipality to actively participate and engage in local & national government planning, implementation and monitoring of WASH activities by March 2017. 2) To strengthen the capacity of duty bearers to act on community/school WASH demands for improved service delivery in Nakawa municipality by end of March 2017.

Target groups

The project will be implemented in four urban poor wards of Nakawa Municipality in Kampala District. The wards are Bukoto, Luzira, Mbuya and Banda. In each of the four wards, the project will facilitate the formation of Advocacy Committees. Approximately 120 citizens will be trained as part of the Advocacy Committees.The Advocacy Committees are expected to reach 2,500 community members with special consideration to women, the elderly, people with disabilities (PWD), and those affected with HIV/AIDS. 5,000 school children will receive training and capacity building through the project. The project will also build the capacity of local duty bearers (100 local councilors and 100 members of School Management Commitees) to better understand the issues around WASH. Indirectly the number of project beneficiaries are estimated at 25,000 people both within and outside of the four project areas.

Dansk Folkehjælp (Danish People’s Aid - DPA) og Community Integrated Development Initiatives (CIDI) fra Kampala, Uganda, har sammen udviklet projektet ‘Citizens’ Action on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (CA-WASH)’. Projektet løber over 3 år og har et samlet budget på 2.889.158 DKK. Formålet med projektet er at styrke lokalbefolkningen (inkl. lokale folkeskoler) og civilsamfundsorganisationer i Nakawa-bydelen i Kampala, således at de kan advokere for bedre vand- og sanitetsforhold. Samtidig vil kapaciteten hos lokale beslutningstagere blive styrket, så de har større forståelse for fordelene ved forbedrede vand- og sanitetsforhold samt de love og regler, som skal sikre borgernes rettigheder på det område. Kernen i projektet er således kapacitetsopbygning og fortalervirksomhed indenfor WASH-sektoren målrettet civilsamfundet og lokale beslutningstagere.
