Overall targets

To showcase that a small CSO can become an important actor in the civil society mobilisation and efforts during Corona times. This will be an opportunity for the REEP girls and the local school mothers to show and practice their organising and assisting roles, as active citizens and REEP volunteers

Immediate targets

The project has two targets objectives and central intervention/activity areas: A) The girls and their educational opportunities, during Corona times B) The girls and their role as civil society actors in the time of Corona.

Target groups

This intervention will hit the local communities massively through the local presence, reputation and legitimacy of REEP (which will be strengthened further). As such, it has a broad outreach, especially through the radio components. The project seeks to reach out to about 200,000 people across the 3 operational districts. In the fight against the Coronavirus and any other diseases, the pregnant women, the elderly and the sick are the most vulnerable in the communities. The virus will defeat them easily if they get it. This project will have the categorized people being taken care of by the REEP Corona Friends. These people will be on examination to ensure no complications in their health or condition. The REEP corps that comprises nursing students and community nurses will show their worth in their field of study as far as taking care of the people is concern. REEP will work closely with local youth groups in the communities as they are residing with the people and will lead for easy access for information delivery. These youth groups will be a strong component of the project as they will assist in door to door campaign in the communities, through the Corona Friends component, led by the REEP girls, school mothers and patrons, for risk free actions. The youth groups will be beneficiaries too as they will receive education on the disease and how to follow the measures put in place to help curb the spread of corona – and as such, the Corona Friends corpse will be supplemented with active local youth. The REEP girls will be active in the door to door delivery of information while maintaining psychical distance. The local people will feel proud that their own daughters are taking active part in educating them about the virus as well as the measures put in place. This is the time to show their worth in the communities and prove that the education of and inclusion of girls is of high importance.

Resume

LIVING IN A RISK ZONE: The sanitation and hygiene situation in the rural parts of northern Ghana is highly critical, therefore this attempt to minimize risks, through local actions. THE SITUATION OF THE PANDEMIC: It is prudent for people to understand that the virus knows no literate nor illiterate or tribe or any difference. There is a need to educate in their native language. Students from the 5 senior high schools have been sent home and especially girls do not have many educational chances. They risk losing their high school years. REEP CORONA FRIENDS: REEP-Ghana has a strong local network of REEP beneficiaries, volunteers and supporters. This 6 month project has two objectives: A) The girls and their educational opportunities, during Corona times B) The girls and their role as civil society actors in the time of Corona. Activities: RADIO CLASSES, REMEDIAL CLASSES, CAPACITY BUILDING OF REEP CORONA FRIENDS AND REEP STAFF and the REEP CORONA FRIENDS IN ACTION. Especially showcasing that REEP girls are ready and empowered to act when such situation arises. The project shows voluntarism, active citizenship and participation.
