Overall targets

The overall objective of this project is to reduce the number of children in institutional care in Addis Ababa by identifying pathways and networks to better support families, in particular single-mother families, who are at risk of needing to send their children to institutions for lack of better options.

Immediate targets

The immediate goals are (1) to identify best practices for supporting families at risk of separation, (2) create a network of actors aimed at reducing the prevalence of institutionalisation of children, (3) to identify and develop and advocacy strategy for change and (4) to develop plans for a scaled up project involving more actors

Target groups

Young single mothers with young children, or young women who are soon to be mothers as well as government, civil society and NGO actors who are stakeholders in child protection.

Resume

The purpose of this intervention is to build a foundation for advocacy and collaboration in Addis Ababa to decrease the unnecessary institutionalization of children due poverty and lack of access to resources. Our target groups are (1) young women, 18-25, with one child or expecting, and can be considered at risk of being separated from their child due to the above reason (2) organizations and institutions involved in family services and child protection in AA. Our main activity will be a 3-day co-creative workshop addressing these goals.
